Member of Parliament from Hamirpur constituency in Himachal, Anurag Thakur has expressed  surprise over Himachal Pradesh government’s decision to file a review petition against Supreme Court order of shutting down liquor vends within 500 meters of national highways.

In a press release issued here today ,Anurag Thakur said that this decision by Supreme Court will help in curbing accidents on highways.  He further said, “ Himachal is the state with mountainous terrain and therefore number of road accidents are already on the higher side and one of the reasons for the same is drinking and driving and this decision will also help in curbing road accidents in the state.”

Anurag Thakur said that on one side we are talking about making state free of any addiction and on the other hand by taking such decisions, government is encouraging addiction.  If state government is incapable of stopping menace of addiction, at least it should refrain from taking such decisions, which further encourage addictions. Government is talking about state’s fiscal position to oppose the same, but there are many other ways to increase revenue of government and it should work on that. If it would have been serious about the fiscal position of the state it wouldn’t have dumped the report of resource mobilization committee, of which senior ministers were part of.

Anurag Thakur appealed to Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh that he should refrain from taking such decisions where Supreme Court has already dismissed review petition filed by several other affected parties and should instead focus on de - addiction which would get him blessings from the people of the state.
