World environment Day Celebrations at Panjab University

Chandigarh, June 05,Tuesday 2018 (kulbir singh kalsi): Natural Biodiversity Society that is also known as team NB from PU had initiated a series of events comprising visit to schools, organizing cleansing drives, cycle rallies, plantation drives etc to celebrate World Environment Day 2018 on theme ‘Beat the Plastic Pollution’. In the sequence a cleansing and plantation drive was organized at Panjab University in collaboration with Horticulture Division of PU.

The cleansing drive was led by Er. Anil Thakur in the morning who estimated that about 200 kg of waste was collected from students’ centre and most of it was plastic. He was optimistic when asked about the ban on use of plastic in educational institutes such as PU. The drive was attended by about eighty employees of PU.

Prof. Ahluwalia on this occasion strongly advocated the complete ban on plastic packing etc. Shri Navtej Singh who is ardent birder from PU was concerned about the harmful impact of plastic on fauna of PU. Dr. Arun Bansal brought his young kids to the drive and put up an ideal example before others.  Dr. Rakesh Mohindra, an international celebrity in cycling was appreciative of the initiative and committed himself for the cause.

To make the day memorable and exemplary a plantation drive was organized near newly built ‘Neerja Bhanot Hostel’. The drive was led by Ms. Renuka Salwan, DPR PU and Prof. Emanual Nahar, DSW, PU.  About fifty trees were planted keeping in view the requirements of the area. Horticulture Division of PU facilitated the events by all logistic involved.
