Indian Institute of Technology Mandi faculty Dr. Chayan K. Nandi has been selected for the prestigious Chemical Research Society of India (CRSI) Bronze Medal for his contribution to Research.

Dr. Chayan K. Nandi, Associate Professor, School of Basic Sciences, IIT Mandi, had established for the first time in India, the most advanced single molecule super resolution nanoscopic technique, especially Stochastic Optical reconstruction Microscopy (STORM). He is using this technique for understanding the optical properties of fluorescent nanomaterials at single molecule level.

Professor Timothy A. Gonsalves, Director, IIT Mandi, congratulated Professor Chayan Nandi on his achievement. Gonsalves said, “CRSI is a professional body that promotes and facilitates research and education in all branches of chemistry.”

Accepting the award, Dr. Chayan Nandi said, “I'm honored to have been chosen for this award. I intend to keep researching in various areas of Chemistry to ensure that our country remains in the forefront of Chemical Research.”

After completing the undergraduate and post-graduate degrees in Chemistry from Burdwan University, West Bengal, Dr. Nandi obtained his Ph.D. from Indian Institute of technology Kanpur where he worked on the gas phase spectroscopy of doubly hydrogen bonded molecular dimer under the supervision of Prof. Tapas Chakraborty. Immediately after completing his PhD, he was an Alexander von Humboldt (AvH) Fellow in Germany, where he worked on Fluorescence Correlation Spectroscopy (FCS) under Prof. Bernhard Brutschy. Subsequently, he moved to Princeton University for another postdoctoral research under Prof. Haw Yang. At Princeton he learnt about the single molecule techniques for understanding various dynamics of biological molecules.

Launched in 2016, IIT Mandi's very own technology-business incubator Catalyst is the first Technology Business Incubator (TBI) in Himachal Pradesh. IIT Mandi is a fully residential institute with more than 100 faculty members, over 1000 students across the four years of Bachelors of Technology (B.Tech) Degree, Master's students and PhD scholars working on Rs. 70 crore worth of ongoing Research Projects.
