CII - IGBC & PGIMER organized Awareness Session on Green Healthcare Facilities

Confederation of Indian Industry - IGBC in association with PGIMER, Chandigarh organized an ‘Awareness Session on Green Healthcare Facilities’ at PGIMER premises today. The session enabled the participants to take informed decisions on various aspects related to design, construction & operation of green hospitals. 


Prof Jagat Ram, Director, PGIMER also addressed the gathering and mentioned that “A green hospital provides a therapeutic environment, which leads to faster and better recovery of patients.

With the huge increase in number of hospitals in coming years, it is all the more important for the healthcare sector to go green.” It is indeed a matter of pride for all of us that PGIMER in association with CII IGBC has taken this important initiative to promote green concepts in the healthcare sector, he added. PGI, the upcoming building of Extension of Nehru Hospital has been constructed as green & energy efficient building & and aspiring for the prestigious IGBC platinum rating


Dr R Chandrashekhar, Chairman IGBC Green Healthcare Rating & Former Chief Architect, Ministry of Health Government of India graced the session and said that, “Rapid advancements in healthcare has made recovery and recuperation of patients faster and more precise. However, there is a growing need to design buildings and projects which holistically addresses fitness, comfort and wellbeing of all the stakeholders involved in the healthcare set-up.” The Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) has launched ‘IGBC Green Healthcare rating system which is a tool that enables the designer to apply green concepts and reduce environmental impacts that are measurable. Its benefits include reduced power & water consumption, ensure sustainability of healthcare facilities, re-structuring of healthcare policies, mitigation of acquired infections in hospitals and enhancement of overall public health.


Expressing his views on the occasion, Prof Ajit Avasthi, Professor In-Charge – Engineering, PGIMER said that “Healing Architecture plays a very important role in a green hospital. We at PGI have taken a great initiative to turn our hospital into a green hospital, we hope that the hospitals all across India should take this initiative and encourage sustainability.”


Mr Ar Jit Kumar Gupta, Chairman IGBC Chandigarh was also present during the session and opined that “Every construction or structure should be green by design and constructed & operated in an environment friendly manner. In days to come, every upcoming building should be a green building.”


During the Programme, Administrative building of Diesel loco Modernisation Works (DMW), Patiala was also awarded prestigious Platinum rating under IGBC Existing building Rating System.


Er P S Saini, Superintending Hospital Engineer (SHE), PGIMER, Chandigarh  explained the projects being taken up by PGI for promoting the concept of green and energy efficient building. He also explained the efforts being made to ensure that all new building in future shall be planned and designed as Green buildings.  


The attempt to spread awareness about Green Hospitals was well received by various stakeholders present during the session.
