1031 Candidates Set to Contest in Haryana Assembly Elections, Including 930 Men and 101 Women, as Per Chief Electoral Officer Pankaj Aggarwal
Haryana is all set for the upcoming Assembly elections on October 5, 2024, with a total of 1031 candidates confirmed to be contesting across the 90 constituencies. Of these, 930 are men and 101 are women candidates, according to the state’s Chief Electoral Officer, Pankaj Aggarwal. Notably, 462 independent candidates are also in the fray, comprising 421 men and 41 women. The nomination process saw 1559 candidates filing a total of 1746 nomination papers. After scrutiny, 1221 candidates were found eligible to contest, while 338 nominations were rejected. By the last date of withdrawal on September 16, 2024, a total of 190 candidates had withdrawn their nominations, leaving the final count of candidates standing at 1031. Comparatively, this is a slight decrease from the 1351 candidates who contested the 2014 elections and the 1169 candidates who stood in the 2019 elections. Pankaj Aggarwal emphasized the transparency and efficiency of the nomination and scrutiny process, noting that the withdrawal of candidates occurred across all 22 districts of Haryana, with significant numbers seen in districts such as Hisar, Karnal, Gurugram, and Kurukshetra. For example, 23 candidates from Hisar and 15 from Kurukshetra opted to withdraw their nominations. After these withdrawals, Panchkula district has 17 candidates, Gurugram has 47, Hisar leads with 89, while districts like Nuh and Palwal have 21 and 33 candidates, respectively. The Chief Electoral Officer highlighted the significance of these elections and urged all eligible voters to cast their vote and participate in the democratic process. Polling will be held on October 5, 2024, from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., followed by vote counting on October 8, 2024. Election symbols have already been allocated to the candidates, and final preparations are underway across the state to ensure a smooth election day. The CEO also stressed the importance of voter participation in maintaining the democratic fabric of the state, urging citizens to ensure their names are on the voter list and exercise their right to vote. This election season, special efforts are being made to ensure that rural and urban voters are equally engaged in the voting process. Historical data from previous elections reflects a growing trend of independent candidates, signaling a competitive and dynamic political environment in Haryana. As the election date nears, the focus on transparency, fair campaigning, and voter turnout remains paramount.
