Chandigarh residents get double bonanza: CM’s residence road opened, flyover gets green signal

Chandigarh, India: Residents of Chandigarh have received double good news that will address many of their concerns. Today, May 1st, the road outside the Punjab Chief Minister’s residence has been opened to the public. Additionally, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has given the green light for the construction of a flyover from Tribune Chowk to Zirakpur in Chandigarh, which will help alleviate traffic congestion.

Chief Minister’s residence road opens after years

The road outside the Chief Minister’s residence had been closed to the public for several years due to security reasons. However, following High Court orders, it has been reopened today.

Flyover to ease traffic woes

The demand for a flyover from Tribune Chowk to Zirakpur had been pending for five years. In 2019, the High Court had put a stay on the construction of the flyover following a petition by an NGO. However, on Tuesday, the court lifted the stay, stating that the flyover had become a necessity for the city and that delaying development work for too long was not in the public interest.

Addressing concerns over trees

The Chandigarh administration had finalized a plan to construct a flyover from Tribune Chowk to Zirakpur to address the increasing traffic congestion between Zirakpur and Chandigarh. However, an organization called Run Club had filed a petition in the High Court objecting to the felling of trees for the flyover project, following which the court had put a stay on the construction. The petitioner had argued that there was no mention of the flyover in the city’s master plan. However, the administration has now amended the master plan and plans to proceed with the flyover construction.

Overall impact

The opening of the road outside the Chief Minister’s residence and the green signal for the flyover construction are welcome developments for Chandigarh residents. These measures are expected to ease traffic congestion and improve the overall quality of life in the city.
