37th Surajkund Crafts Fair Inaugurated, Showcasing Rich Cultural Tapestry
Celebrating Craftsmanship and Cultural Exchange
Chandigarh, February 2:
The 37th Surajkund International Crafts Fair kicked off in grand style on February 2nd, 2024, with President Droupadi Murmu gracing the inauguration ceremony. The event, held in Chandigarh, drew dignitaries like Haryana Governor Bandaru Dattatreya and Chief Minister Manohar Lal, reflecting its significance.
This year’s fair boasts Tanzania as the partner nation, highlighting the growing cultural ties between India and East Africa. Visitors can immerse themselves in Tanzanian dance, music, and cuisine, alongside the vibrant arts and crafts of the partner state, Gujarat. The North Eastern Handicrafts and Handloom Development Corporation Limited adds another layer of cultural richness to the tapestry of the event.
President Murmu praised the dedication of artisans who preserve India’s artistic heritage, emphasizing the fair’s economic significance with anticipated trade exceeding Rs 20 crore. She interacted with artisans, explored state pavilions, and encouraged participants from various countries.
Governor Dattatreya hailed the fair’s evolution into a global tourist attraction, attracting over 14 lakh visitors last year. He expects even greater diversity and cultural exchange this year, with participation from over 50 countries.
Chief Minister Lal expressed gratitude to the President and highlighted the historical significance of Surajkund. He emphasized the fair’s role in showcasing Haryana’s identity and welcomed artisans from Tanzania and Gujarat. He also mentioned the record participation of over 40 countries and the provision of over 1000 stalls for artisans. He expects a vibrant event celebrating art, culture, and tradition, attracting 15-20 lakh visitors over 16 days.
Tourism Minister Surajpal credited Chief Minister Lal’s leadership for the fair’s expansion and global reach. Union Minister Krishan Pal and other dignitaries also attended the ceremony, marking the commencement of this celebrated event.
