The Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, is preparing to enter a new phase of healthcare delivery with the inauguration of several major infrastructure projects that are expected to significantly strengthen advanced medical services across North India. The projects are scheduled to be dedicated to the nation during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the institute on July 17.
Addressing a media briefing ahead of the Prime Minister’s visit, PGIMER Director Prof. Vivek Lal described the upcoming inauguration as a defining milestone in the institute’s journey towards healthcare excellence. He said the new facilities are designed to enhance access to advanced, affordable and patient-centric healthcare while expanding PGIMER’s capacity to meet the growing medical needs of the region.
The briefing was attended by Deputy Director (Administration) Pankaj Rai, along with senior faculty members Prof. S.K. Gupta and Prof. Vanita Jain, who outlined the institute’s preparations for the high-profile event and highlighted the importance of the projects for the future of public healthcare.
The expansion is expected to benefit millions of patients not only from Chandigarh but also from Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Uttarakhand and several neighbouring states that depend on PGIMER as one of India’s leading tertiary care institutions.
Officials said the new healthcare infrastructure has been planned to improve patient services, strengthen specialised treatment facilities, support cutting-edge medical research and create additional capacity for medical education and training. The projects are also expected to reduce waiting periods for specialised treatment and improve access to high-end diagnostic and clinical services.
Over the decades, PGIMER has emerged as one of India’s premier centres for medical education, research and patient care, receiving thousands of referrals every day from across northern India. The latest expansion is being viewed as another significant step towards modernising public healthcare infrastructure and preparing the institute to address future healthcare challenges.
With the formal dedication of these projects on July 17, PGIMER is expected to further consolidate its position as a national centre of excellence, reinforcing the government’s focus on strengthening public health infrastructure and making quality healthcare more accessible and affordable for people across the country.
