Dharamsala (Arvind Sharma) 20/6/23
Former minister and MLA of Dharamsala, Sudhir Sharma, said, “ a helipad will be constructed at the tourist destination of Dharamkot, which is situated at a higher altitude than McLeodganj, the seat of the Dalai Lama, in Dharamshala.” Dharamkot, located at an altitude of 2,100 meters, is 3 kilometers away from McLeodganj (at 2,082 meters). “In recent years, many star hotels have been established in Dharamkot, attracting quality tourists. However, these tourists often face traffic congestion when traveling from McLeodganj to Dharamkot. The construction of the helipad will provide a convenient means for tourists to reach Dharamkot from Gaggal airport in just a few minutes. The required land for the helipad is available, and the construction work will commence soon,” Sudhir said while talking to media .
Dharamkot offers panoramic views of the Kangra Valley and the Dhauladhar ranges. It is home to the Vipassana meditation center, Dhamma Shikara, and the Tushita Meditation Centre, which is a renowned center for the study and practice of Buddhism in the Tibetan Mahayana tradition. Dharamkot is often referred to as the “Tel Aviv of hills” and is the only village in the state with a Jewish community center. It serves as the starting point for the famous 9-kilometer trek to Triund, a popular spot to experience snow throughout the year.
He added that to alleviate traffic congestion from Dharamsala to McLeodganj, a ropeway has already been initiated. Furthermore, the expansion of Gaggal airport in Dharamsala is set to begin, following the state government’s decision to acquire land for the expansion. The extended runway length of 3,010 meters will enable the operation of A320 aircraft, enhancing facilities for tourists.
Sudhir said, “In terms of sustainability, solar roofing is being installed in major government buildings in Dharamshala to ensure a constant supply of green energy even during calamities. Additionally, ice and roller skating rinks are being constructed, along with seven large sports stadiums in the Vidhansabha constituency, which will cater to various outdoor games. Furthermore, an internationally standardized convention center is being built in the city.”
