AAP Labels Congress as ‘Irrelevant’ Ahead of Delhi Assembly Elections

As the Delhi Assembly elections approach, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has intensified its rhetoric against the Congress party, branding it as “irrelevant” in the current political landscape. AAP leaders have accused Congress of colluding with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to undermine their electoral efforts. This assertion comes as AAP closely monitors approximately ten constituencies in the city where they anticipate strong competition from Congress candidates.

Key battlegrounds include constituencies like Okhla, Chandni Chowk, and Badli, where prominent Congress figures are contesting against AAP incumbents. For instance, Ariba Khan, daughter of former Congress MLA Asif Ahmed Khan, is challenging AAP’s Amanatullah Khan in Okhla. Similarly, Mudhit Agarwal, son of senior Congress leader JP Aggarwal, is running against AAP’s Punardeep Singh Sahni in Chandni Chowk. In Badli, Delhi Congress chief Devender Yadav will face off against AAP’s Ajay Yadav, both of whom are current legislators.

The stakes are high for AAP as they fear that any gains made by Congress could inadvertently bolster the BJP’s position in the elections. Historically, this concern stems from the 2017 Municipal Corporation elections where AAP’s vote share plummeted to 26% while Congress’s increased to 21%, leading to a significant loss for AAP despite their earlier success in the assembly elections.

The upcoming elections on February 5 are pivotal for all parties involved. With BJP aiming to regain its foothold in Delhi after being out of power for 27 years, any increase in Congress’s vote share could complicate AAP’s efforts to maintain its dominance. AAP insiders express that this election is shaping up to be one of their toughest yet; they believe winning more than 50 out of the 70 seats would secure their position comfortably.

The political atmosphere is charged as all three parties—AAP, BJP, and Congress—ramp up their campaigns. Each party is making promises ranging from free education to subsidies for essential services. The outcome of this election will not only determine the future governance of Delhi but also set the stage for broader political dynamics in India.
