On Saturday, Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav took a veiled swipe at Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, suggesting that being a true “saint” is defined not by appearance but by the words a person uses. Yadav made this remark while speaking at an event marking the birthday of “Khajanchi,” a boy born to a woman who was standing in line to exchange currency notes during the post-demonetisation period. The boy, named Khajanchi by Yadav, has become symbolic of the hardships caused by the policy.

Yadav further commented that those who rely on aggressive tactics, such as encounters, may soon face a decline in their political power. Without directly mentioning anyone, he observed that people with cunning tendencies often show bitterness in their speech. He hinted that political figures have changed their language, as well as their ways of thinking and understanding, suggesting that these transformations are revealing a different side of leadership.

Akhilesh Yadav questioned the authenticity of someone who considers themselves a “Yogi” yet does not view anyone as their equal, indicating that actions by the current leadership may be causing division among religious figures. He remarked that a true saint speaks less and prioritizes the welfare of the people. In contrast, Yadav alleged that current leaders are using divisive and harsh language, asserting that a person’s worth as a Yogi is not signified by what they wear, but by what they say.

Reflecting on demonetisation, Yadav said that as Khajanchi grows older, his presence will serve as a reminder of the policy’s failure. He described demonetisation as “the biggest corruption in economic history,” calling it a superficial exercise that created significant suffering. According to Yadav, demonetisation was a “slow poison” impacting farmers, laborers, salaried individuals, small traders, and vendors alike. He accused the BJP of using demonetisation as a vehicle for corruption, rather than as a meaningful economic reform.
