Amritsar Takes Comprehensive Measures to Improve Road Safety

Amritsar, November 13: As part of ongoing efforts to enhance road safety, the Amritsar district administration has held a high-level meeting to address traffic concerns and implement measures to reduce accidents. Chaired by Deputy Commissioner Sakshi Sahani, the meeting brought together various departments including the police, municipal corporation, and public works department.
A significant focus of the meeting was on improving road infrastructure and visibility, especially during foggy weather. The Deputy Commissioner directed officials to replace damaged streetlights and install additional reflectors along roads to improve visibility. Furthermore, she emphasized the need for more speed breakers in strategic locations to reduce speeding.
Key Decisions and Initiatives:
- Increased Traffic Enforcement: The Police Commissioner, Gurpreet Singh Bhullar, reported that 43,639 traffic challans have been issued this year to deter traffic violations and improve road discipline.
- Parking Infrastructure: The Municipal Corporation has been tasked with creating more parking spaces to reduce on-street parking and decongest traffic.
- Pedestrian Safety: The installation of zebra crossings at key intersections and the enforcement of pedestrian safety rules were also discussed.
- BRTS Lane Usage: The dedicated bus rapid transit (BRT) lanes will be temporarily opened for two-wheelers and emergency vehicles to improve traffic flow.
- CCTV Surveillance: The city is equipped with over 1874 CCTV cameras to monitor traffic and identify traffic violations.
The Joint Director of Traffic, Punjab Police, Desh Raj, highlighted the concerning statistics of road accidents in the state. He emphasized the need to identify accident-prone areas and implement targeted measures to reduce accidents. The meeting also discussed the importance of enforcing traffic rules and educating the public about road safety.
The meeting underscored the need for close coordination between different departments to address traffic issues. The police, municipal corporation, public works department, and other stakeholders will work together to implement the decisions taken.
