An attempted shooting targeting Shiromani Akali Dal leader Sukhbir Singh Badal near the Golden Temple on Wednesday was thwarted by quick-thinking bystanders. Badal, serving as a ‘sewadar’ outside the Sikh shrine despite being wheelchair-bound due to a leg injury, escaped unharmed. Television footage captured the attacker, Narain Singh of Dera Baba Nanak, approaching Badal with a firearm before being subdued by someone nearby. The incident unfolded during the second day of Badal’s public penance for alleged mistakes made by the SAD government between 2007 and 2017. A single shot was fired, hitting a wall behind Badal, as security whisked the assailant away.
