Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s visit to Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal in Tihar jail on Monday has stirred controversy as he alleged that Kejriwal was being denied basic amenities, a treatment he likened to that of a hardcore criminal.

Mann, accompanied by AAP Rajya Sabha MP Sandeep Pathak, expressed dismay over the conditions Kejriwal was reportedly facing, stating that they were separated by a glass wall during their half-hour meeting and could only interact over a phone call.

Expressing his emotional response to seeing Kejriwal in such circumstances, Mann questioned the rationale behind treating him as a hardcore criminal, emphasizing Kejriwal’s contributions to initiatives like building mohalla clinics.

Furthermore, Mann disclosed that Kejriwal had urged him to campaign for INDIA bloc candidates, indicating his continued involvement in political affairs despite being incarcerated.

Asserting confidence in AAP’s political prospects, Mann predicted a strong emergence for the party on June 4, coinciding with the announcement of Lok Sabha election results.

Pathak echoed Mann’s sentiments, highlighting Kejriwal’s dedication to addressing Delhi’s issues even from jail, planning ministerial discussions and encouraging MLAs to engage with the public.

The meeting transpired in the ‘mulakat jangla,’ a room partitioned by a glass wall, as confirmed by a Tihar jail official. Security was tight, with local police deployed outside the jail premises, given Mann’s Z+ protectee status.

Kejriwal, arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on March 21, awaits the agency’s response to his plea on April 27, with the court reconvening on April 29 for further proceedings. The setback in the Supreme Court dashed hopes of an early hearing, following the Delhi High Court’s recent rejection of a similar petition.

The visit has sparked outrage, with concerns raised about Kejriwal’s treatment and implications for political dissent.
