India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has achieved a significant breakthrough in soldier protection with the development of the country’s lightest bulletproof jacket. This innovative jacket, designed by DRDO’s Defence Materials and Stores Research and Development Establishment (DMSRDE), Kanpur, offers unparalleled protection against the highest threat level ammunition while prioritizing soldier comfort and mobility.

Unmatched Protection, Unmatched Comfort

The new bulletproof jacket boasts the capability to withstand multiple hits (6 rounds) from 7.62 x 54 R API ammunition, a sniper round classified as Level 6 under BIS 17051 standards. This remarkable feat is achieved through a novel design approach that incorporates cutting-edge materials and processes. The jacket’s core lies in its ergonomically designed front Hard Armour Panel (HAP). This panel utilizes a one-piece (monolithic) ceramic plate backed by a specialized polymer, offering superior ballistic protection while maintaining exceptional wearability and comfort during operations.

Innovation for the Future Battlefield

The groundbreaking design translates into a significant weight reduction. The areal density of the In-conjunction with (ICW) Hard Armour Panel (HAP) and the standalone HAP is an impressive feat of engineering, clocking in at under 40 kg/m2 and 43 kg/m2 respectively. This reduction in weight translates to enhanced soldier mobility and agility, crucial factors in modern warfare.
