Calcutta High Court Rebukes West Bengal Government Over Sandeshkhali Unrest

In a significant development, the Calcutta High Court has issued a scathing rebuke against the West Bengal government regarding the Sandeshkhali unrest. The court’s strong stance comes amidst allegations of sexual abuse and forceful land acquisition by accused individuals, notably including Trinamool Congress leader Shahjahan Sheikh.

The High Court, comprising Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam and Justice Hiranmay Bhattacharya, condemned the state’s alleged support of Shahjahan Sheikh, who faces multiple accusations of sexual assault and land grabbing. The judiciary emphasized that no individual should hold an entire population to ransom, signaling a clear call for accountability from the ruling dispensation.

Notably, BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari’s plea to visit Sandeshkhali was granted by the division bench, despite opposition from the West Bengal government. This decision underscores the court’s commitment to ensuring transparency and justice in the face of unrest and allegations of criminal activity.

Moreover, the court expressed its intent to compel Shahjahan Sheikh to surrender, highlighting the urgency of addressing the situation. With several women from Sandeshkhali alleging coercion, land grabbing, and sexual assault by Sheikh and his supporters, the court stressed the imperative for law enforcement to take decisive action.

The judiciary’s critique of the state’s handling of the matter extends to its failure to apprehend Sheikh despite multiple offenses and a brazen attack on Enforcement Directorate officials. This failure underscores the necessity for a comprehensive approach to addressing the underlying issues and ensuring accountability for those responsible.

In conclusion, the Calcutta High Court’s condemnation of the Sandeshkhali unrest serves as a clarion call for justice and accountability. By demanding Sheikh’s surrender and urging the state to uphold the rule of law, the judiciary reaffirms its commitment to protecting the rights and safety of all citizens, particularly vulnerable communities affected by criminal activities.
