Can the Congress Party Break Its Election Performance Record on October 8?

Saptrishi Soni:

With voting completed on October 5 for the Haryana Assembly elections, all eyes are now on the counting of votes scheduled for October 8. This election could represent a significant turning point in Haryana’s political history, especially for the Congress Party, which is striving to improve upon its previous electoral performance.

Historically, Congress achieved its highest vote percentage of 46.91% in 1972, winning 52 seats in the then 81-member Assembly. Subsequently, in 2005, the party won its highest number of seats—67—with a vote percentage of 42.46%. Notably, during these elections, Congress did not lose the deposit for any of its candidates.

Electoral History of Haryana

Haryana became a separate state from Punjab on November 1, 1966. Since then, 14 assembly elections have been held. Throughout these elections, the performance of the Congress Party has fluctuated significantly.

1967: In its first Assembly election, Congress won 48 out of 81 seats, with a vote percentage of 41.33%.
1968: The following year, Congress again secured 48 seats, raising its vote percentage to 43.83%.
1972: This year marked a peak for Congress with 52 seats and a vote percentage of 46.91%.
2005: Congress achieved its best performance, winning 67 seats without any candidate losing their deposit.

However, there have also been several instances of severe defeats for the party.

 Congress’s Weaknesses

1977: Congress won only 3 seats with a dismal vote percentage of 17.15%. In this election, 38 candidates lost their deposits.
1987: The party managed to secure only 5 seats, achieving a vote percentage of 29.18%.
1996: Congress won 9 seats with a vote percentage of 20.82%, resulting in 35 candidates losing their deposits.
2014: In this election, Congress secured only 15 seats, with 37 candidates losing their deposits and a vote percentage of 20.58%.
2019: Most recently, Congress won 31 seats with a vote percentage of 28.08%, and 27 candidates lost their deposits.

Exit Polls for October 8

Current exit polls from various news channels and election agencies project that Congress is likely to win between 50 to 55 seats, potentially achieving a clear majority. This time, the party has incorporated several new strategies in its campaign, focusing on local issues.

Political Analysis

Analysts believe that Congress’s future in Haryana hinges on the issues raised during the electoral campaign, such as agriculture, unemployment, education, and healthcare. Learning from past failures, Congress has revamped its strategy to appeal to voters effectively.

The results of the vote counting on October 8 will determine whether Congress can enhance its previous performance. If the party performs as projected by exit polls, it could lead to a new direction in Haryana’s politics. However, it’s essential for Congress to focus on the issues that matter to voters, learning from its historical context.

Overall, this election holds the potential to reshape Haryana’s political landscape, and all eyes are on the outcomes.
