Canada has dealt a significant blow to aspiring immigrants, particularly those from Punjab, as the last viable path for obtaining Permanent Residency (PR) has been closed. In a major policy shift, the Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA), which had been an important route for securing additional points toward PR eligibility, is now being phased out. Canada’s Immigration Minister, Marc Miller, confirmed that LMIA has been widely misused, with fraudulent activities rampant, including demands of up to 70,000 dollars for a single paper. This has prompted the Canadian government to tighten immigration rules to prevent exploitation. LMIA previously offered an extra 50 points for PR applicants, but the misuse of this provision has led to its removal from the system.
Moreover, the Canadian government has already curtailed the issuance of multiple-entry visas, previously valid for 10 years, now replacing them with mostly single-entry visas. The number of visas issued to international students has also been reduced to 437,000, further reflecting the tightening of immigration policies. These changes mark a significant shift in Canada’s approach to immigration and reflect the increasing pressure to control fraudulent practices.
