CCRAS-WHO National Consultation on Research Priority Settings in Traditional Medicine

CCRAS in collaboration with World Health Organisation will organize an important national consultation meeting on “Research Priority Settings in Traditional Medicine”

Central AYUSH Centre , an apex autonomous organisation under the Ministry of AYUSH Ayurvedic Science The Council of Traditional Medicine (CCRAS ) is all set to organize a one day National Consultation Meeting on “Research Priority Settings in Traditional Medicine” on June 24 , 2024 at India Habitat Centre , New Delhi. WHO-SEARO ( World Health Organization-South This important event , organised in collaboration with the WHO – GTMC ( Global Centre for Traditional Medicine) , marks a pioneering effort in aligning traditional medicine research with global standards and priorities.

This first consultation meeting of its kind will bring together representatives from various fields of traditional medicine in India including policy makers , academic institutions , researchers , patients and industry stakeholders on one platform. It aims to discuss and discuss various traditional medicine practices like Ayurveda , Siddha , Unani and Homeopathy. The aim is to identify and prioritise key research areas in medical systems. The initiative is in line with the WHO mandate in traditional medicine , said Vaidya Rabinarayan Acharya, director general of CCRAS.

Recently , a peripheral institute of CCRS in Hyderabad , National Institute of Indian Medical Heritage (NIIMH ) has been designated as a World Health Organization collaborating centre for “Basic and Literary Research in Traditional Medicine” (WHOCC IND- 177 ). This designation underlines the importance of the upcoming research priority setting exercise. , which will lay out a research roadmap for the next decade. It aims to ensure effective use of funds and address critical areas of need within traditional medicine , to support its global acceptance and integration.

Led by Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha, Secretary, Ministry of AYUSH and Professor (Vaidya) Rabinarayan Acharya , CCRAS has initiated this important process to prioritize research areas in traditional medicine. This meeting will be attended by traditional medicine representatives from across the country , including Advisors and Joint Secretaries of the Ministry of AYUSH , representative of NITI Aayog , Directors General of all five AYUSH Research Councils , Chairpersons of National Commissions (NCISM and NCH), Vice Chancellors of AYUSH/Ayurveda Universities , Directors of National Institutes under the Ministry of AYUSH , PHFI , RIS-FITM , CSIR , BIS , ICMR , WHO , AYUSH Pharmaceutical Industry , Ethnopharmacology from TDU and representatives from other organizations will be present.

The key themes to be addressed include medicinal plant research , quality , safety and efficacy studies , pre-clinical validations , rational use of traditional medicines , clinical trial monitoring , medical anthropology and digitisation of ancient medical literature. There are around 100 institutes in the AYUSH sector. Stakeholders/experts will participate in this meeting, which will ensure that the dialogue is broad and inclusive.

The aim of this one-day national consultation meeting is to form the basis for the initial preparation for a decade-long research strategy in traditional medicine , promote exchange of views among stakeholders and align their efforts in line with WHO guidelines. The approach is expected to significantly contribute to the advancement and integration of traditional medicine systems globally.
