Chandigarh Cycles its Way to Health and HIV Awareness: A Huge Success for State AIDS Control Society

Chandigarh, December 4, 2023: In a vibrant display of health and awareness, the Chandigarh State AIDS Control Society (CSACS) organized a massive Cycle Rally on December 3rd. Starting from the iconic Sukhna Lake and culminating at the New Lake in Sector 42, the rally saw over 250 enthusiastic cyclists pedal their way to a healthier future.

Flagged off by Sh. Ajay Chagti, IAS Secretary Health, Chandigarh Administration, and Dr. Suman Singh, Director Health Services, the event resonated with the importance of adopting healthy lifestyles. Secretary Chagti encouraged everyone to embrace cycling as a regular activity, praising CSACS’s remarkable efforts in curbing HIV/AIDS and educating the masses about its transmission and prevention.

The diverse participants, ranging from college students to families with young children, painted a heartwarming picture of community engagement. Their creatively decorated cycles, emblazoned with the powerful message “Know AIDS for No AIDS,” served as rolling billboards, urging people to seek accurate information about the disease. Placards carrying thought-provoking slogans further amplified the awareness drive.

Adding to the safety and spirit of the rally, an ambulance accompanied the cyclists throughout the journey. Leading by example, Sh. Chagti, Dr. Singh, Sh. Rajiv Tewari (Director, DPR), and Dr. Virender Nagpal (Project Director, CSACS) joined the cyclists on their own bikes, advocating for a healthy tomorrow.

The event also awarded prizes for the best-decorated cycle that effectively conveyed HIV transmission modes. Additionally, participants who aced the HIV/AIDS quiz held at Lake Sector 42 were recognized and encouraged to avail themselves of free, voluntary HIV testing at the stationed mobile van.

Project Director Dr. Nagpal highlighted the declining HIV trend in Chandigarh, attributing it to extensive awareness campaigns like this rally. He emphasized that the age group of 15-39 remains most susceptible to HIV/AIDS and Sexually Transmitted Diseases, making such initiatives even more crucial.

The Chandigarh Cycle Rally stands as a testament to the power of community action in promoting health and combating HIV/AIDS. It’s a reminder that small steps, like choosing a bicycle over a car, can contribute to a healthier, more informed society.
