Chandigarh Heritage Conservation Committee Approves Key Urban Development Projects with a Focus on Historical Significance
The Chandigarh Administration recently held the 23rd meeting of the Chandigarh Heritage Conservation Committee (CHCC) under the leadership of Sh. Rajeev Verma, Advisor to the Administrator, UT Chandigarh. The meeting was attended by prominent officials, including Smt. Anindita Mitra, Secretary Urban Planning and Commissioner of the Municipal Corporation, and Sh. Vinay Partap Singh, Deputy Commissioner-cum-Estate Officer, among others. Key technical experts from the CHCC, such as Mr. Rajnish Wattas and Mr. Mac Sarin, also participated in the discussions.
The Chief Architect of UT Chandigarh presented the committee’s genesis, constitution, and mandate to the Chairman, laying the foundation for subsequent deliberations on various urban development projects. Among the significant topics discussed was the management of the Capitol Complex, a UNESCO World Heritage site, along with a review of ongoing projects, including the Martyrs Memorial.
The CHCC principally approved these proposals, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the historical integrity of Chandigarh’s iconic structures. One notable approval was for the ‘Street for People’ project in Sector 15, which falls under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) scheme, aimed at creating pedestrian-friendly urban spaces.
The Chairman praised the Master Plan of Panjab University for its comprehensive approach, ensuring that any new developments align with the institution’s rich historical heritage. He also stressed the need for strict adherence to Government of India guidelines and meticulous planning in executing these projects.
This meeting underscores Chandigarh’s commitment to preserving its cultural heritage while promoting sustainable urban development, ensuring that the city’s future growth respects its storied past.
