The workshop on Millets under “Chandigarh Millet Mission” was organized today at Senior Citizen Home, sector 15 by the Department of Social Welfare, Women & Child Development, Chandigarh Administration in convergence with Food Safety Department, Chandigarh, PGIMER Chandigarh, Chandigarh Institute of Hotel Management and Elderline Chandigarh. The year 2023 has been declared as the International Year of Millets by the UN General Assembly.
Taking forward the vision to spread the awareness about the importance of millets in the city beautiful, “Chandigarh Millets Mission” has been launched on 12.11.2022 by Ms. Nitika Pawar, Secretary Social Welfare, Women & Child Development, Chandigarh Administration. Under this campaign series of activities are being organized such as demonstration of Millet recipes, Distribution of IEC materials, promotion through social media handles, recipes video on the youtube page, online and offline awareness sessions, e-goshties, etc.. Keeping the zest this millet workshop has also been organized with great zeal.
This workshop has been attended by about 40 residents of Senior Citizen Home, Sector 15 & Sector 43, and employees of these institutions. The objective is to sensitize the beneficiaries to adopt the habit of inclusion of millets in their daily diet. During the workshop, the experts from PGIMER, FSSAI, and CIHM have taken interactive and knowledgeable sessions on the Nutritional & Environmental benefits of Millets.
Further, the most notable part of the workshop was the live cooking session conducted by the chefs from CIHM College. Millet recipes preparation have been demonstrated to the participants. Various millet-based food have been prepared by the chef and has been distributed among the participants for the tasting. These healthy and delicious foods got lots of appreciation from all the participants.
The participants have also been engaged in various millet-based games organized by the team of PGIMER, Chandigarh. Out of the various games, Snake and Ladder game was the most entertaining. These games are so beautifully designed that one can easily learn about the different millets and their health benefits while playing.
The event was graced with the presence of Ms. Seema Sharma, AC&FA, Department of Social Welfare, Women & Child Development, Shri Sukhwinder Singh, Designated officer FSSAI, Mr. JP Kant, CIHM, Sarita Godwani, State Consultant, POSHAN Abhiyaan, Sh. Vikramjeet Godwani, Project Manager, Elderline, Dr Poonam Khanna, Associate Professor & Dr Rachna from Deptt. Of Community medicine were present. About 100 participants were present during the event.
