Chandigarh Officials Assess Ongoing City Restoration Efforts After Recent Floods

Chandigarh, July 18, 2023 –

Sh. Nitin Kumar Yadav, IAS, Home Secretary and Secretary of Local Government, U.T., Chandigarh, personally conducted a thorough evaluation of the ongoing restoration efforts in the city following the devastating floods that occurred recently.

According to reports from the Chief Engineer’s office, the floods caused significant damage at 115 locations throughout Chandigarh. The primary cause of the damage was identified as the failure of roads due to broken Circular Brick Drains (CBDs).

One specific area of concern is the road dividing Sector-14/15, which has been closed to traffic since July 8, 2023. During his visit, Sh. Nitin Kumar Yadav emphasized the importance of providing clear timelines for the completion of repairs to this vital road, urging the officials involved to expedite the restoration process.

Another heavily affected area is the road leading to the Railway Station near CTU Workshop, where a bridge over Sukhna Choe suffered severe damage, necessitating its closure to traffic.

The Chief Engineer of Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh, explained that due to the extensive damage sustained, it will take approximately one month to complete all necessary construction work before the road can be reopened.

Recognizing the seriousness of the situation, Sh. Nitin Kumar Yadav instructed the Chief Engineer, U.T., Chandigarh, to develop long-term plans for the regular clearance of drains to prevent storm lines from becoming submerged during heavy rainfall. This measure aims to address the temporary flooding that often affects the city. The Home Secretary stressed the importance of clearing the drains of silt and debris to ensure the unobstructed flow of rainwater.

Expressing his concern for the inconveniences faced by citizens due to the aftermath of the floods, Sh. Nitin Kumar Yadav urged the authorities to prioritize and expedite the restoration works without any further delays. He emphasized the significance of providing specific timelines for each repair project, aiming to provide relief to the affected residents and restore normalcy in the city as soon as possible.

The administration will continue to closely monitor the progress of the restoration efforts and ensure regular updates are provided to the public.

Sh. Nitin Kumar Yadav was accompanied by the Chief Engineer of Municipal Corporation, Sh. N.P Sharma, and the Chief Engineer of Chandigarh Administration, Sh. C.B Ojha.
