Himachal Pradesh’s First Digital Library and Relief Package Challenges in Bilaspur
Inaugural Digital Library and Dim Prospects for Relief Package
Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu Announces Generous Grants During Bilaspur Visit
During a brief visit to Bilaspur district, Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu unveiled a series of initiatives, including the groundbreaking for Himachal Pradesh’s inaugural digital library in the Roda sector of Bilaspur, set to cost approximately three crore rupees. Additionally, he laid the foundation stone for the Krishi Bhavan project in Dholra, with a budget of 5.18 crore rupees, emphasizing the need for both projects to be completed within two years.
The state’s first digital library, a pioneering endeavor, will make books accessible in digital format through the internet. Sukhu pledged to extend this digital library model to ten panchayats across various regions in Bilaspur, ensuring rural residents can reap the benefits. The Himachal Pradesh State Electronic Development Corporation has signed a contract to oversee this project.
The Krishi Bhavan will offer a host of amenities, including parking, an office for the Deputy Director, a meeting hall for farmers, a video conferencing facility, and ample rooms for officials and staff.
In a statement to the media during the event, the Chief Minister acknowledged the significant damage caused by recent disasters in Himachal Pradesh. To aid affected communities, the state government has already allocated a special relief package worth 4,500 crore rupees, utilizing its own resources for assistance. Sukhu confirmed that relief distribution for affected individuals in Bilaspur district will occur on October 25th.
The state has submitted claims amounting to 12,000 crore rupees related to the disaster to the Central Government. However, hopes for a special relief package from the Center appear uncertain. Sukhu mentioned his personal meetings with the Prime Minister, the Home Minister, and other Union Government leaders, as well as discussions with the National BJP President, in which he urged expedited funds release according to established claim procedures. He expressed disappointment in the BJP’s response, characterizing their stance as indifferent to the plight of affected families.
Furthermore, the Chief Minister highlighted the BJP’s lack of support for the resolution presented during the Assembly session, proposing that the natural calamity be classified as a ‘National Disaster,’ entitling the state to a special relief package. Sukhu extended gratitude to voluntary contributors and donors who contributed to the disaster relief fund.
Responding to media inquiries about the strike by Zila Parishad cadre employees, the Chief Minister urged them to end their strike and return to work, emphasizing the government’s commitment to resolving their concerns and advancing relief and rehabilitation efforts.
