Chief Minister Directs Swift Assessment of Damages Due to Heavy Rains, Announces Special Relief Package

In a virtual meeting held late Thursday evening, Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu issued clear directives to all Deputy Commissioners (DCs) to expedite assessments of damages and losses incurred by the state due to heavy rains within a tight three-day timeframe. The Chief Minister emphasized the government’s unwavering commitment to extending assistance to all those affected by the disaster, urging officials to ensure the diligent distribution of relief to affected individuals and communities.

Under the Chief Minister’s guidance, Deputy Commissioners have been instructed to conduct thorough evaluations of damages within their respective districts, designating affected regions as disaster-affected zones. Revenue officers, including Sub-Divisional Magistrates (SDMs) and Deputy Commissioners, will be held accountable for the proper and transparent distribution of relief funds to those in need.

In response to the extensive devastation caused by incessant rains, the State government has announced a special relief package, significantly increasing compensation to provide substantial aid to those impacted by the catastrophe. Chief Minister Sh. Sukhu noted, “Our focus is on supporting our citizens during these challenging times.”

Highlights of the Special Relief Package Include:

– Compensation for partial damage to a pucca house increased from Rs. 12,500 to one lakh rupees.

Chief Minister Sukhu expressed his concern over areas at risk of sinking, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive study. Adequate assistance for individuals whose properties were entirely destroyed must be ensured.

To combat the illegal smuggling of forest resources, the state government has banned the export of timber and firewood out of the state. District authorities have been instructed to strictly enforce these orders.

The Chief Minister lauded the dedicated efforts of district authorities during the calamity, noting their success in reinstating electricity and water supply schemes within just 48 hours. He stressed the importance of restoring roads to facilitate the transportation of farmers’ produce to markets, pledging that the State Government would allocate necessary funds to hire machinery for road connectivity restoration.
