Chief Minister Sukhu Inaugurates New Trauma Centre at Tanda Medical College, Emphasizes Health Sector Reforms

In a significant boost to healthcare infrastructure, Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu inaugurated the Trauma Centre Level-II at Dr. Rajendra Prasad Government Medical College in Tanda, Kangra district, established at a cost of Rs. 10.27 crore. He announced that Rs. 6 crore have been allocated for advanced machinery and equipment, Rs. 1.50 crore for construction, and Rs. 2.77 crore for other essential services. This new facility includes 95 sanctioned positions for specialized roles like a neurosurgeon, orthopedic surgeon, anesthetists, casualty medical officers, nursing staff, and technicians. Currently, 72 of these posts have been filled, with the remaining positions expected to be filled soon.

Following the inauguration, Chief Minister Sukhu presided over a review meeting with health officials at Tanda Medical College, where he reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to strengthening the facilities across Himachal Pradesh’s medical colleges. He emphasized that improving in-state treatment options will reduce the financial burden on residents who often seek costly treatments elsewhere. Tanda Medical College, which caters to almost half of the state’s healthcare needs with an annual footfall of around 5.89 lakh patients, will undergo modernization with the latest medical technology to meet this demand.

Plans are underway to establish a high-end laboratory at Tanda, and the Chief Minister assured full government support in equipping the institution with advanced resources. Highlighting the government’s commitment to healthcare and education, he stated, “We cannot provide the best care with outdated technology. Medical colleges have been encouraged to submit their requirements, and the government will work to meet all demands.”

The Chief Minister also acknowledged the positive impact of recent reforms at Tanda Medical College, including advancements in cardiology. New medical procedures have been successfully introduced, such as valve replacements, congenital heart defect repairs, heart tumor surgeries, and renal denervation. In line with future expansion, the government plans to introduce PET scan machines and robotic surgery at Tanda, enhancing its medical service capabilities. The state has also partnered with AIIMS to procure cutting-edge medical equipment, particularly for high-demand departments. Walk-in interviews are currently being conducted to recruit additional doctors, nurses, and paramedical staff to improve the doctor-patient ratio and provide comprehensive care.

To support healthcare workers at Tanda Medical College, the state government has also announced plans for new residential quarters. Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation Chairman R.S. Bali commended the Chief Minister’s dedication to improving healthcare services in Tanda. Bali expressed gratitude to the government for staffing support, including 20 medical officers and 300 nurses, among other personnel, for the college.

Prominent figures, including Agriculture Minister Chander Kumar, AYUSH Minister Yadvinder Goma, Chief Parliamentary Secretary Kishori Lal, Deputy Chief Whip Kewal Singh Pathania, MLA Malendra Rajan, former MLAs Surendra Kaku and Ajay Mahajan, Congress leader Devendra Jaggi, and other local leaders and dignitaries, were also present to support the Chief Minister’s healthcare initiative.
