CM Sukhu Accuses BJP and Ravi Thakur of Political Betrayal and Bribery, Urges Voters to Protect Democracy
Lahaul-Spiti, Himachal Pradesh – Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu took to the campaign trail in Udaipur, Lahaul-Spiti, vigorously advocating for Congress candidates Anuradha Rana and Vikramaditya Singh in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections. During his speeches, CM Sukhu launched a scathing attack on former MLA Ravi Thakur and the BJP, accusing them of bribery and political betrayal. Addressing a large gathering, CM Sukhu accused former MLA Ravi Thakur of burdening the people of Lahaul-Spiti with a by-election by betraying the Congress party. He claimed that Thakur sold his integrity for BJP’s “political market” and crossed all limits of shamelessness. Sukhu revealed that when some Congress MLAs questioned Thakur about cross-voting in the Rajya Sabha elections, Thakur attempted to lure them to the BJP, offering a bribe of ₹15 crore each.
Sukhu highlighted that the Congress government had met all of Thakur’s demands. He pointed out that after he became Chief Minister, the first Himachal Day was celebrated in Spiti Valley, where the women’s pension scheme of ₹1500 per month was also initiated. As of May 1, 2023, women in Spiti Valley began receiving the pension, and by February 1, 2024, the scheme had been extended to the entire district. The Chief Minister assured the people that the pensions were being deposited directly into women’s bank accounts. The Chief Minister criticized Leader of the Opposition Jairam Thakur’s failed attempts to overthrow the government, highlighting the BJP’s poor understanding of political dynamics. He emphasized that the BJP’s efforts to destabilize the Congress government were thwarted by strong public support for the ruling party.
CM Sukhu urged voters to support Anuradha Rana, the Congress candidate from Lahaul-Spiti, describing her as an honest and dedicated representative. He warned against wasting votes on independent candidates and assured that Rana’s victory was inevitable. Sukhu criticized independent candidates for staging protests to get their resignations accepted, highlighting the unprecedented nature of such actions in India’s political history. Sukhu framed the election as a battle between truth and corruption, emphasizing that the current election is about answering the politics of deceit and bribery. He assured the public that the Congress government is stable and will complete its remaining term of three and a half years. The Chief Minister also took a dig at Jairam Thakur for repeatedly approaching the Election Commission to block the women’s pension scheme, while BJP had once promised to deposit ₹15 lakh in citizens’ accounts.
The Chief Minister enumerated the Congress government’s achievements, including the initiation of a process to provide 22,000 government jobs within a year, in contrast to the BJP’s five-year record of 20,000 jobs. He highlighted the government’s efforts to curb corruption, resulting in an additional revenue of ₹2200 crore. Sukhu mentioned the implementation of the old pension scheme (OPS), a 4% DA hike for government employees, increased diet money for police personnel, minimum support price for milk, and various welfare schemes for different sections of society. CM Sukhu praised the state government’s response to last year’s disaster in Himachal Pradesh. He assured that no farmer or horticulturist was left without aid, and the government significantly increased compensation to facilitate rehabilitation. He emphasized his own background from a common family, expressing a deep understanding of the people’s pain and struggles.
Before addressing the rally, CM Sukhu visited the Triloknath Temple to seek blessings. The event saw the presence of key figures, including Revenue Minister Jagat Singh Negi, Chief Parliamentary Secretary Sunder Singh Thakur, MLA Bhuwaneswar Gaur, Lahaul-Spiti Congress candidate Anuradha Rana, and other party officials.
