Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, while addressing a public gathering in Shahpur, emphasized the government’s commitment to women empowerment through a series of impactful schemes and policy reforms. Extending his greetings on International Women’s Day, CM Sukhu credited former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi for providing 33 percent reservation for women in Panchayati Raj Institutions, a move that he said transformed societal attitudes towards women’s participation in governance.
The Chief Minister highlighted the state government’s recent amendment to the land law, ensuring equal property rights for daughters, and the increase of women’s reservation in police recruitment to 30 percent. These initiatives, he said, reflect the government’s focus on gender equality and safety. Additionally, the Indira Gandhi Sukh Shiksha Yojana was mentioned, under which the government is bearing the educational expenses of children of widowed women, ensuring that financial hardships do not hinder their education.
CM Sukhu also announced that under the Indira Gandhi Pyari Behna Sukh Samman Nidhi Yojana, eligible women would receive Rs. 18,000 annually, with plans to increase this amount to Rs. 1,500 per month for all qualified beneficiaries. The move is expected to provide substantial financial support to women, particularly in rural areas. His speech underscored the administration’s belief that empowered women are essential to making Himachal Pradesh self-reliant.
