“Congress Grapples with Candidate Selection Dilemma Ahead of Punjab Lok Sabha Elections”
As the clock ticks down to the crucial Lok Sabha elections in Punjab scheduled for June 1st, the Congress is gearing up to announce its candidates for the state. With just a month left for canvassing, the party is strategizing to field candidates who can offer a tough fight and secure victory in the polls.
Amidst this backdrop, dissent has emerged within the party ranks, particularly from senior leaders in Patiala, over the choice of Dr. Dharamvira Gandhi as the candidate for the Patiala constituency. Notably, former PPCC chief Lal Singh and former MLA Hardyal Kamboj, both contenders for the seat, have voiced their opposition to Dr. Gandhi’s candidature, raising concerns that have now reached the party high command.
In a move that has stirred speculation, the Congress is reportedly considering Balkaur Singh, father of popular singer Sidhu Moosewala, as an Independent candidate from Bathinda. PPCC chief Amrinder Raja Warring has hinted at this possibility, although Balkaur Singh is yet to make his stance clear on the matter.
Furthermore, deliberations are ongoing within the party regarding potential candidates for other key constituencies. In Gurdaspur, the Congress may field former Deputy CM Sukhjinder Randhawa or MLA Barindermeet Pahra, signaling a strategic shift to bolster its prospects in the region.
Meanwhile, in Ludhiana, the screening committee meeting held in Delhi has underscored the importance of selecting candidates who can effectively represent the party’s interests and resonate with the electorate.
With the elections fast approaching, the Congress faces the challenging task of balancing internal dissent with the imperative of putting forth a united front to secure victory. The party’s decision on candidate selection will have far-reaching implications for its electoral fortunes in Punjab.
