Congress Protests in Shimla Over Anurag Thakur’s Remarks on Kharge, Demands Apology
Shimla, April 6, 2025 — The Himachal Pradesh Congress Committee (HPCC) on Saturday staged a strong protest in Shimla condemning the alleged “indecent remarks” made by Hamirpur MP Anurag Thakur against Congress national president Mallikarjun Kharge during a recent parliamentary debate on the Waqf Board Bill.
Speaking to the media, HPCC president Pratibha Singh demanded a public apology from Anurag Thakur, asserting that the Congress will continue its state-wide protests until he retracts his statements. “We are deeply saddened by the disrespect shown towards our senior leader. Anurag Thakur must stay within the bounds of parliamentary decorum,” she said.
Congress Accuses BJP MPs of Ignoring Himachal’s Issues in Parliament
Pratibha Singh also criticized the BJP MPs from Himachal Pradesh, alleging that they have failed to raise local issues in Parliament. “When Congress was in power at the Centre, our MPs regularly brought Himachal’s issues to the Prime Minister’s notice. Unfortunately, BJP MPs have neglected this responsibility,” she added.
Top Congress Leaders Slam Anurag Thakur
Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri accused Thakur of making baseless personal attacks against senior Congress leaders like Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi merely to stay in the good books of his party leadership.
“The BJP avoids discussions on real issues in Parliament, such as the collapsing economy, skyrocketing unemployment, and the country’s core challenges. Instead, they resort to diversionary tactics and personal slander,” said Agnihotri.
PWD Minister Vikramaditya Singh echoed similar sentiments, stating, “Anurag Thakur has shown blatant disrespect to senior leaders of the Congress. The people of Himachal elected him to voice the state’s concerns in Parliament, not to indulge in political mudslinging.”
AICC spokesperson Kuldeep Rathore also condemned Thakur’s remarks, calling them “irresponsible and unbecoming of a parliamentarian from Himachal Pradesh.”
Congress Vows Statewide Protests Until Apology
The HPCC has announced plans to intensify its agitation if Anurag Thakur does not issue a formal apology. According to party leaders, similar protests will be held in other districts of Himachal in the coming days as part of a coordinated state-level campaign.
