Congress Slams BJP for Failing Farmers, Vows Legal MSP Guarantee Under INDIA Bloc Government

In a fiery statement on Thursday, the Congress party criticized the BJP for not fulfilling its promises to farmers’ organizations, asserting that an INDIA bloc government will honor all its commitments to farmers, including the legal guarantee of Minimum Support Price (MSP).

Congress Accuses BJP of Betrayal

Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh pointed out that while elections have concluded in 428 constituencies, 115 seats, including those in Punjab and Haryana, are yet to be contested. In a video statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), Ramesh highlighted the ongoing farmers’ movement in Haryana and Punjab, which has been active for the past five years. Despite the government’s repeal of the “three black farm laws,” Ramesh accused the Modi administration of failing to deliver on promises made to farmer organizations.

“For the last five years, the Modi government has continuously ignored the farmers’ movement in Haryana, Punjab, and Uttar Pradesh. Atrocities were committed against the farmers. Now they are talking about snatching the MSP from the farmers of Punjab and Haryana for burning stubble,” Ramesh said. He stressed that the Congress strongly opposes any such policy.

A Commitment to Farmers’ Rights

Ramesh emphasized that farmer justice will be a top priority for the incoming INDIA Janbandhan government. He reaffirmed the party’s stance in a Hindi post on X, stating, “Farmer justice will be the top priority for the incoming INDIA Janbandhan government.” The post was accompanied by a video statement where he laid out the party’s five concrete guarantees for farmers, detailed in the Congress’s Nyay Patra.

Five Concrete Guarantees for Farmers

1. Legal Guarantee of MSP: Ramesh stated that the Congress will ensure a legal guarantee of MSP, based on the Swaminathan formula. This would ensure that farmers receive a fair price for their produce, safeguarding their livelihoods.

2. Permanent Commission for Loan Waiver Plans: The Congress promises to establish a permanent commission to effectively implement loan waiver plans. This measure aims to alleviate the financial burdens on farmers, providing them with much-needed relief from debt.

3. Timely Insurance Payments: The party guarantees direct transfer of insurance payments within 30 days of crop loss. This initiative is designed to provide timely compensation to farmers, helping them recover swiftly from unforeseen agricultural setbacks.

4. Balanced Import-Export Policy: Ramesh highlighted the need for a proper import-export policy that supports domestic farmers. By regulating agricultural imports and exports, the Congress aims to stabilize market prices and protect local farming interests.

5. Removal of GST on Farming Essentials: The Congress plans to remove the Goods and Services Tax (GST) from all farming necessities. This move is intended to reduce the cost of agricultural inputs, making farming more affordable for the average farmer.

The farmers’ movement, particularly in Punjab and Haryana, gained significant momentum over the past few years, culminating in large-scale protests against the BJP’s farm laws. Despite the laws being repealed, dissatisfaction remains due to unmet promises and ongoing challenges faced by farmers. The movement has brought to light issues such as MSP, loan waivers, and crop insurance, which remain critical for the agricultural community.Ramesh’s statement comes at a crucial time, with polling in Punjab and Haryana set for June 1. The Congress’s renewed focus on farmers’ rights and its detailed guarantees are designed to resonate with the rural electorate, who have felt marginalized and ignored by the current administration.

The Congress’s commitment to addressing farmers’ concerns is not just a political strategy but a promise to bring tangible improvements to the agricultural sector. By emphasizing legal guarantees for MSP, timely insurance payouts, and the removal of GST on farming essentials, the party aims to rebuild trust and support among farmers.

As the final phase of the general elections approaches, the Congress’s assurances to the farming community will be pivotal in shaping voter sentiment in Punjab and Haryana. With a clear focus on farmer justice and comprehensive agricultural reforms, the party hopes to garner significant support and pave the way for an INDIA bloc government that prioritizes the needs and rights of farmers.
