The Congress party has reacted strongly to allegations made by BJP MP Kangana Ranaut, accusing the Himachal Pradesh government of diverting disaster relief funds to Congress leader Sonia Gandhi. Vikramaditya Singh, Himachal Pradesh’s Public Works Department Minister, condemned Ms. Ranaut’s statements, demanding that she either provide evidence to support her claim or face legal action for defamation. Singh termed her allegations baseless and defamatory, questioning the foundation of her accusations against a leader of Sonia Gandhi’s stature.

Singh further challenged Ms. Ranaut to present proof that even a single rupee was misappropriated. “There cannot be a more foolish statement than saying funds from the Centre or the state for development are being handed over to Sonia Gandhi,” he remarked. He emphasized that all financial transactions from the central government are subjected to proper audits, ensuring transparency in their use. Singh also made it clear that if Kangana does not retract her statements and issue a public apology within a week, the Congress would move forward with a criminal defamation lawsuit.

The controversy erupted when Kangana Ranaut, while launching a membership drive in her constituency, made serious allegations against the Congress and Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu. She claimed that the state government has failed to utilize disaster relief funds appropriately, and instead diverted the money to what she termed the “Sonia Relief Fund.” Ranaut criticized the Congress for its handling of state finances and called on the people to “root out” the current government, accusing it of taking loans that allegedly made Himachal Pradesh’s economy “hollow.”

The Congress party has swiftly countered these claims, labeling them as false and inflammatory.
