On Thursday, December 5, a controversy erupted in the Rajya Sabha after security officials discovered a wad of currency notes during a routine anti-sabotage check of the chamber. The notes were found at seat number 222, which is allotted to Dr. Abhishek Manu Singhvi, a Member of Parliament from Telangana. Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar confirmed the discovery and stated that the matter had come to his attention. He assured the House that an investigation is underway.
The incident took place after the adjournment of the session, and it sparked an uproar among Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) members, who raised concerns about the recovery. Dhankhar mentioned in the House that the notes appeared to be Rs 500 denominations, with an estimated total of 100 notes. However, it has yet to be confirmed whether the notes are authentic or counterfeit.
As the controversy unfolded, Singhvi responded to the allegations, describing the situation as bizarre and politically motivated. He clarified that he only carries a single Rs 500 note when attending sessions in the Rajya Sabha, dismissing any allegations of misconduct.
Opposition Leader Mallikarjun Kharge expressed his concerns about the premature naming of Singhvi by the Chairman, emphasizing that the investigation should be completed before any conclusions are drawn. In contrast, Leader of the House J P Nadda accused the opposition of selectively highlighting certain issues while attempting to downplay others.
The discovery of the currency notes has prompted the Rajya Sabha to initiate a formal investigation, in line with established procedures, to determine the authenticity and source of the recovered money.
