Czech Republic Delegation Meets Punjab Governor & Chandigarh Administrator to Strengthen Bilateral Relations

Chandigarh, November 28: A high-profile delegation from the Czech Republic, led by Ambassador Dr. Eliska Zigova, along with Guneet Chaudhary, Honorary Consulate of the Czech Republic in Chandigarh, held an important meeting with Sh. Gulab Chand Kataria, the Governor of Punjab & Administrator of UT Chandigarh, today at Punjab Raj Bhawan. The meeting focused on enhancing bilateral ties through strategic collaborations, especially in the areas of urban development, public transportation, education, and cultural exchange.

Key Highlights of the Meeting:

  • Sister City Collaboration: The discussions centered around fostering a sister city partnership between Chandigarh and cities in the Czech Republic. This collaboration is set to focus on environmental sustainability, waste management, innovative public transport, educational exchanges, and cultural initiatives.
  • Innovative Transportation Solutions: Dr. Zigova proposed introducing a tram system as a sustainable alternative to metro systems in Chandigarh. She highlighted the potential of this eco-friendly mode of transport to blend seamlessly with the city’s landscape and its rich heritage. Additionally, the delegation introduced the concept of hydrogen buses for inter-city connectivity, aiming to reduce carbon emissions and promote green transportation.
  • Educational and Cultural Exchange: A student exchange program was proposed to foster deeper cultural understanding between the youth of Chandigarh and the Czech Republic. The delegation also suggested organizing cultural festivals, including food and film events in Chandigarh, to showcase the rich traditions of both cultures.

Governor’s Response:
Sh. Gulab Chand Kataria welcomed these proposals and assured the delegation of his support. He committed to directing the Chandigarh administration to prepare a detailed project report comparing the viability of tram and metro systems, as well as the introduction of hydrogen buses. The Governor also emphasized the importance of educational and cultural exchanges in strengthening ties between the two nations.

Looking ahead, Dr. Zigova announced that a delegation from the Czech Republic will visit Chandigarh in March 2025 for further discussions on advancing collaborative initiatives. This visit will focus on sustainable urban development, trade, tourism, and deepening the cultural bond between both regions.
