In the politically crucial northern states of Punjab and Haryana, Dera Sacha Sauda has long held a significant influence, especially during elections. With a notable presence over nearly 26 seats, no political party dares to overlook the sway of the Dera and its leader, Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh. As the Haryana Assembly elections draw near, Chief Minister Naib Singh Saini has approved the parole of the convicted Dera chief. Gurmeet Ram Rahim, serving a sentence for rape and murder, has been granted a 20-day parole, sparking political debate across the state. The parole application, submitted by Ram Rahim, was cleared by the Chief Minister on Tuesday and subsequently forwarded to the Divisional Commissioner of Rohtak for further processing.

According to sources, after the Chief Minister’s clearance, the Prisons Department moved the application forward to the Divisional Commissioner. Gurmeet Ram Rahim is expected to be released soon, pending final approvals from the local administration in Uttar Pradesh’s Baghpat, where he plans to stay during the parole period.

This development comes just days before the Haryana Assembly elections, scheduled for October 5. The timing of Ram Rahim’s parole has raised eyebrows, with many pointing to the potential electoral implications. The Election Commission had earlier given the green light for the state government to “consider” Ram Rahim’s parole request, further intensifying the discussions around his release.

Political analysts highlight the Dera’s substantial voter base and its strategic importance in shaping the outcome of elections in Haryana. In previous elections, the Dera has shown an ability to mobilize its followers, often swinging results in favor of parties it endorses.
