Displaced Population Exceeds 50,000 in Manipur Amidst Ethnic Violence, Relief Efforts Continue

Imphal, Manipur: The ongoing ethnic violence in Manipur has forced over 50,000 people to seek refuge in 349 relief camps across the state, according to State Information and Public Relations Minister RK Ranjan. The minister made this announcement during a press briefing held in Imphal on Sunday. In response to the dire situation, authorities have initiated combing operations in all districts, with a particular focus on areas deemed vulnerable.

In the past 24 hours, security forces operating in Manipur have successfully seized a significant cache of weaponry. This includes 57 firearms, 318 rounds of ammunition, and five explosive devices, all recovered from various locations, such as the Porompat police station in Imphal East, the Sugnu police station, and the Kakching district. The total count of confiscated arms and ammunition now stands at 868 firearms and 11,518 rounds since the operations began.

Meanwhile, the Manipur government has decided to extend its ban on internet services until June 15. An official order issued by Commissioner (Home) T Ranjit Singh late Saturday evening stated that the suspension of mobile data services, including broadband, will remain in effect until 3 pm on June 15. This ban on internet services was initially imposed on May 3, as a measure to maintain security and control the dissemination of information.

The situation in Manipur remains tense as relief efforts continue to support the displaced population while security forces intensify combing operations to maintain law and order. The extension of the internet services ban reflects the government’s commitment to preventing the misuse of digital platforms that could potentially aggravate the situation further.
