ED Seeks 10-Day Custody for Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal in Liquor Scam Case
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) sought a 10-day custody for Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal from a lower court on Friday, alleging that he was the ‘mastermind’ behind the liquor scam along with other ministers and AAP leaders. The ED informed the Rouse Avenue Court through Special Judge Kaveri Baweja that Kejriwal received several crores of rupees as bribes from the ‘South Group’ to formulate and implement Delhi’s Excise Policy 2021-22. Consequently, a 10-day custodial remand was demanded by the ED.
During the hearing, Kejriwal stated, “My life is dedicated to the nation.” The court granted Kejriwal permission to speak with his lawyer. Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Raju will represent the ED. Kejriwal had two lawyers present in court on his behalf.
A team from the ED has reached the Rouse Avenue Court with regards to Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal. The court awaits the judge for further proceedings.
The ED conducted an interrogation of Kejriwal and conducted a search at his residence before arresting him on Thursday evening. He was taken to the headquarters of the federal agency where he spent the night.
Delhi Minister and AAP leader Atishi expressed concern about the security of Arvind Kejriwal on Friday. She said in a press conference, “Arvind Kejriwal has Z+ security. He is in the custody of the central government’s ED.” She accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of wanting to eliminate the opposition.
Gopal Rai claimed that Kejriwal’s family has been placed under surveillance, and AAP has been unable to contact the Delhi CM’s parents. He initially alleged that permission to meet Kejriwal’s family was denied, but later, permission was granted.
According to Congress sources, Rahul Gandhi spoke with Kejriwal over the phone and is expected to visit his residence to meet his family members at 10 AM. He assured them of support.
ASG Raju informed the court, “We have applied for a 10-day remand.” He stated that “AAP” is not an individual but an organization, and every individual responsible for the organization’s conduct will be held accountable. Kejriwal’s side is being represented by senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi. After withdrawing the plea from the High Court against the ED’s custody in connection with the investigation into the excise policy-related money laundering case, Kejriwal was produced before the lower court. Kejriwal’s lawyers stated that they would challenge the remand proceedings in the lower court and then return to the High Court with another plea.
