MLA Charged in Electoral Offenses
The Himachal Pradesh police recently initiated a legal action against an independent MLA and the father of a Congress rebel, among others, in connection with alleged electoral misconduct during the recent Rajya Sabha polls.
This move follows a complaint filed by Congress MLAs Sanjay Avasthi and Bhuvneshwar Gaur. The case involves accusations of criminal conspiracy, corruption, and undue influence on the election process. Among those implicated are Hamirpur’s independent MLA Ashish Sharma and the father of disqualified MLA Chetanya Sharma. These individuals, along with others, are alleged to have supported the BJP candidate, Harsh Mahajan, in the said polls, which caused turmoil within the state’s Congress government. The situation escalated further when Congress candidate Manu Singhvi lost to Harsh Mahajan, exacerbating the party’s predicament. Currently, the disqualified MLAs, along with independent legislators, are in Uttarakhand awaiting a Supreme Court hearing scheduled for March 12th. Meanwhile, the Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister has convened a ministerial meeting at his official residence, Oak Over, to address the crisis.
