Punjab is intensifying its war on drugs, recognizing the crucial role women play in combating this pervasive issue. A recent Stakeholder Consultation, organized by the Health Department, brought together psychiatrists, Punjab Police representatives, and NGOs to discuss strategies for empowering women in this fight. The initiative, driven by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann’s commitment to a drug-free Punjab, places women at the forefront of prevention and rehabilitation efforts.
Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr. Balbir Singh, who chaired the workshop virtually, emphasized the pivotal role women can play.“Women can play a vital role in supporting family members affected by drug abuse and helping them access rehabilitation services,” he stated. He acknowledged that while the government is actively targeting drug peddlers and suppliers, rehabilitation is equally crucial in preventing young people from falling victim to drug abuse.Dr. Balbir Singh reiterated the government’s commitment to providing integrated health services for those struggling with addiction, prioritizing women’s involvement in this process. He urged all stakeholders to collaborate towards Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann’s vision of a “Rangla Punjab,” a vibrant and drug-free state.
The focus on women’s empowerment is a key shift in Punjab’s approach. It recognizes the unique influence women have within families and communities, positioning them as powerful agents of change. Women are often the first to recognize signs of drug abuse in their loved ones and are vital in providing support and encouragement throughout the recovery process. Their involvement extends beyond the home, as they can also play a significant role in community-based prevention efforts.
Gurpreet Kaur Deo, Special Director General of Police (Special DGP) Community Affairs Division, announced that the Punjab Police will launch an outreach program specifically designed to engage with women. This program aims to empower women and equip them with the knowledge and resources they need to effectively combat the drug menace within their communities. The collaboration between the Health Department, Punjab Police, and organizations like Alliance India underscores the multi-pronged approach being taken to address this complex issue.
Dr. Hitinder Kaur, Director of Health Services, directed Civil Surgeons, Psychiatrists, and drug de-addiction service providers to prioritize integrated health services, ensuring women’s active participation in the process.Experts like Dr. Sandeep Bhola, Assistant Director and State Mental Health Officer, along with Dr. Manju Bansal and Kunal Kishore from Alliance India, stressed the importance of women’s involvement in providing support and facilitating access to rehabilitation services. The consultation highlighted the need for comprehensive rehabilitation programs and the establishment of self-help groups, where women can share experiences, offer mutual support, and work together to create drug-free environments.
This concerted effort to empower women in the fight against drugs represents a significant step towards creating a healthier and more secure future for Punjab. By leveraging the strength and influence of women, the state aims to create a powerful network of support and prevention, ultimately achieving its goal of a drug-free Punjab.
