Enhancing Educational Facilities: CM Sukhu Inaugurates New Block at RKMV
In a significant step towards improving the educational landscape of Himachal Pradesh, Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu inaugurated the newly constructed Block-C building of Rajkiya Kanya Mahavidyalaya (RKMV) in a ceremony today. This modern facility, built at a cost of ₹9 crore, is part of the government’s commitment to enhance educational infrastructure rather than merely open new institutions.
During the event, CM Sukhu presided over the Annual Prize Distribution Ceremony for the 2023-24 academic year, recognizing students who excelled in various fields. He also announced a grant of ₹2 lakh for the college, supporting cultural initiatives by students.
Addressing the gathering, Sukhu outlined several ambitious plans for RKMV, including the transformation of all classrooms into smart classrooms, the construction of a new hostel, and the allocation of ₹50 lakh for a digital library and repairs to the science block. He highlighted that the state government contributed ₹6 crore towards the construction of Block-C.
Sukhu emphasized that the primary goal of the state government is not merely to increase the number of schools and colleges, but to ensure that they are well-equipped with qualified teachers and essential facilities. Expressing concern over Himachal Pradesh’s ranking of 21st in educational quality nationwide, he stated that the government would prohibit teacher transfers during the academic year and develop policies to tackle future challenges. He mentioned the phased establishment of Rajiv Gandhi Day-Boarding Schools in all assembly constituencies to improve education quality in rural areas.
The Chief Minister also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to women’s welfare and empowerment. Notable measures include raising the marriageable age for girls from 18 to 21 and amending the 51-year-old Himachal Pradesh Land Holding Ceiling Act, allowing adult daughters to claim a separate 150-bigha unit of ancestral property. Additionally, the government introduced a 30% reservation for women in police recruitment.
Reflecting on his own educational journey, Sukhu expressed pride in the legacy of RKMV, which has produced distinguished alumni, including Vijaya Thakur, Himachal’s first Indian Foreign Service officer, and IPS officer Tilotama Verma.
Furthermore, the Chief Minister outlined various initiatives aimed at supporting vulnerable groups in the state. The government has adopted 4,000 orphaned children as “Children of the State” and provides free education to 23,000 children of widowed mothers. He introduced the Dr. YS Parmar Vidyarthi Rin Yojana, offering loans of up to ₹20 lakh at just 1% interest to underprivileged students pursuing higher education. Additionally, efforts are underway to establish a State-Level Drug Prevention and Rehabilitation Center in Kotla-Barog, Sirmaur District, to assist those struggling with addiction, along with a Center of Excellence in Kandaghat, Solan District, for 9,000 differently-abled students.
Earlier in the program, Principal Anurita Saxena welcomed the Chief Minister and presented the college’s annual report. The event was attended by various dignitaries, including MLA Harish Janartha, Mayor Surinder Chauhan, Deputy Mayor Uma Kaushal, Deputy Commissioner Anupam Kashyap, SP Sanjeev Gandhi, ENC NP Singh, and Director of Higher Education Amarjeet Sharma.
