Farmers have announced plans to march to Delhi on December 6, leading the Ambala administration to impose Section 163 in the region. This move comes after several farmers’ organizations in Punjab declared their intention to travel from Shambhu Border to Delhi. The police have set up strong security measures at Shambhu Border, including barricades, making it difficult for people to proceed towards Delhi. As a result, travelers are being redirected through alternate routes like Chandigarh, causing significant inconvenience to the public.
The Shambhu Border has been a hotbed of the ongoing farmers’ protest (Farmer Movement 2.0), with farmers having camped at the border since February 13. In response to the new developments, the Ambala district administration has taken extra precautions to prevent the farmers from reaching Delhi. Section 163 has been enforced, banning the gathering of five or more people in the area. The administration’s primary aim is to stop the farmers from reaching Delhi, a plan that is expected to escalate tensions in the region.
In February, a three-layer barricading was set up at Shambhu Border in anticipation of the farmers’ march towards Delhi, blocking all routes leading to the capital. Since then, the Delhi-Amritsar Highway has remained closed, and now, once again, farmers are preparing to make the journey to Delhi, raising concerns over possible disruptions and clashes.
