Farmers protesting for a legal guarantee on Minimum Support Prices (MSP) suspended their foot march to Delhi on Friday after clashes with security forces left several injured. The protesters had begun their march from Shambhu Border, located on the Punjab-Haryana border, but were met with resistance from the police, who used tear gas to block their path. This led to injuries for six farmers during the altercation that occurred on National Highway 44.
Sarwan Singh Pandher, a farmer leader, announced that the protest would be called off for the day due to the injuries sustained by the farmers. He stated that the farmer bodies, including Samyukta Kisan Morcha (non-political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha, would soon decide on the next course of action.
The farmers’ protest, part of their long-standing demand for a legal guarantee on MSP, resumed after a brief halt in response to the police’s deployment of tear gas. The tension escalated when large barricades were placed by the police to stop the protesters, who had already dismantled some of the barriers. The police had cited the Indian National Security Act (BNS 163) and imposed restrictions on gatherings of more than five people in the area. As a result, the authorities had positioned thousands of police and paramilitary personnel at various border points to control the situation.
The protest, which began three and a half hours into the farmers’ march, saw barricades set up on multiple fronts, including three-layered concrete barricades at Shambhu and Khamori Borders, where approximately 2,500 security personnel were stationed. Despite this, the farmers, who had already crossed certain checkpoints, were determined to press ahead with their demands for MSP reform.
With the heavy deployment of forces, including water cannons and armored vehicles, the protest has been marked by rising tensions between farmers and law enforcement. Over 1,000 police personnel and paramilitary forces were present at the scene, ensuring strict measures were in place to prevent any escalation.
The farmers, many of whom have been protesting for over nine months, are demanding legal guarantees for MSP to ensure fair prices for their crops. The protest has drawn significant attention as the farmers seek to exert pressure on the government to address their concerns, particularly the future of agriculture in India.
The farmers’ struggle continues as they navigate a complex political and social landscape, with discussions ongoing about the next steps in their efforts for legal guarantees for MSP.
