The seventh and final phase of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections is underway today, with voters casting their ballots across 18 constituencies in North India, including Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, and the Union Territory of Chandigarh. This crucial phase not only decides the fate of candidates in these regions but also includes significant by-elections for six assembly seats in Himachal Pradesh, which could impact the state’s political landscape.

Polling began at 7 AM, and within the first two hours, a notable turnout was recorded. In Punjab, which has 13 Lok Sabha constituencies, the voter turnout was 9.64%. Chandigarh, with its single parliamentary seat, saw an impressive 11.64% turnout. Himachal Pradesh, voting for its four parliamentary seats, recorded nearly 14.35% voter participation.

Among the Punjab constituencies, Ferozepur led with an 11.61% turnout, followed closely by Sangrur at 11.36%. Amritsar, however, recorded a lower turnout of 7.22%, while other key areas like Anandpur Sahib, Bathinda, and Faridkot saw turnouts of 9.53%, 9.74%, and 9.83%, respectively.

In Himachal Pradesh, voting is also being conducted for six assembly seats, previously held by Congress MLAs who turned rebels and joined the BJP after cross-voting in the Rajya Sabha elections. This by-election is critical for the Congress government in the state, which faces a challenge to maintain its hold.

The electoral process today saw significant participation from prominent political figures. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, state BJP chief Sunil Jakhar, AAP leader Raghav Chadha, Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema, and several other key candidates cast their votes early in the day. Congress leader Amrinder Singh Raja Warring voted in Muktsar, while BJP candidate Sanjay Tandon, along with his family, exercised their franchise in Chandigarh.

One of the most watched contests is in Patiala, where BJP nominee and four-time MP Preneet Kaur is seeking re-election. In Chandigarh, BJP’s Sanjay Tandon faces Congress’ former Union minister Manish Tewari, promising a tight race.

Overall, Punjab has 328 candidates, including 26 women, competing in this election phase. Chandigarh has 19 candidates, including two women. In total, 2,14,61,739 voters in Punjab and 6,59,805 voters in Chandigarh are eligible to cast their votes, highlighting the significant electoral engagement in this phase.

By 9 AM, the Election Commission’s voter-turnout app reported an approximate turnout of 11.31% across the constituencies. This phase is witnessing substantial voter enthusiasm despite the severe heatwave conditions affecting parts of the country. Voters were seen queuing up at polling stations early in the morning, determined to make their voices heard.

The simultaneous by-elections for six assembly seats in Himachal Pradesh are particularly noteworthy. These seats, once held by Congress, are now contested by BJP candidates after the incumbents defected. This by-election is a litmus test for the Congress government in Himachal Pradesh, as it seeks to retain control amid these defections.
