“Former BJP Leader Birender Singh Rejoins Congress, Deals Blow to Haryana’s Ruling Party Amidst Turmoil”

Amidst the ongoing fallout from the contentious farm laws and allegations of sexual harassment against BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Haryana faced another setback as former Union minister and prominent Jat leader Birender Singh made a significant move by rejoining the Congress after a decade-long association with the BJP.

Birender Singh, accompanied by his wife Prem Lata, a former MLA, was warmly welcomed back into the Congress fold by the party’s general secretary Mukul Wasnik. The event witnessed the presence of key figures from the Congress’ Haryana leadership, including Leader of the Opposition and former CM Bhupinder Singh Hooda, PCC chief Uday Bhan, AICC general secretaries Kumari Selja and Randeep Surjewala, and chairman OBC Congress Ajay Singh Yadav.

Syed Naseer Hussain, representing Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s office, former Punjab Chief Minister Rajinder Kaur Bhattal, and party spokesperson Pawan Khera were also in attendance to mark the momentous occasion.

Despite the absence of Deepak Babaria, the AICC incharge of the party’s Haryana unit, the event garnered significant attention. Birender Singh’s son Brijendra Singh, who recently defected from the BJP to join the Congress and is poised to contest from the Hisar parliamentary constituency on the Congress ticket, also graced the occasion.

Birender Singh, hailing from the lineage of the renowned Jat leader Sir Chhotu Ram, criticized the BJP’s stance on agricultural issues, emphasizing their lack of empathy towards farmers. He highlighted how certain BJP members reacted unfavorably to his proposal of setting a “benchmark” for various crops. Despite his affiliation with the BJP, Birender Singh consistently supported the farmer protests and advocated for the rights of women wrestlers. He expressed surprise at not being expelled from the party for his dissenting views.

Reflecting on his decision to return to the Congress, Birender Singh emphasized the significance of ideological alignment, referring to it as an “ideological rehabilitation” for him. With a longstanding association spanning four decades, including stints as the PCC chief and aspirations for the chief ministerial role, Birender Singh’s return to the Congress marks a significant realignment in Haryana’s political landscape.

The move comes at a crucial juncture for both parties, with the Congress aiming to consolidate its position in the state and the BJP grappling with internal turmoil and public discontent. Birender Singh’s reentry into the Congress fold is expected to bolster the party’s prospects ahead of upcoming elections while dealing a blow to the BJP’s dominance in the region.

As the political landscape in Haryana continues to evolve, Birender Singh’s decision underscores the fluidity of alliances and the enduring impact of ideological affinity in shaping the trajectory of state politics.
