The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast another round of rain and snowfall across North India starting from Thursday, January 2, 2025, bringing relief to the region after a prolonged dry spell. Light rain and snow are anticipated at isolated locations on January 2 and 3, intensifying over high and mid-hill areas on January 4. The precipitation is expected to peak on January 5 and 6, with widespread rain and snowfall forecast for most places on January 5 and several locations on January 6.
This upcoming wet spell follows significant precipitation in late December, which effectively ended a dry phase lasting over three months. The December rainfall also contributed to reducing the region’s post-monsoon rain deficiency to below 40%, providing much-needed respite for residents and farmers alike.
While average maximum and minimum temperatures in the region are expected to remain stable over the next two days, cooler days are likely as the precipitation progresses. Chandigarh, the capital of Punjab and Haryana, is likely to experience temperatures ranging from a maximum of 18°C to a minimum of 6°C during this period.
Temperature Trends Across Northern India
- Punjab: Maximum temperatures are expected to hover around 18°C-20°C, while minimums may drop to 5°C-7°C.
- Himachal Pradesh: Snow-prone regions, including Shimla and Manali, will likely see temperatures plummeting to below freezing, with highs between 5°C-8°C and lows dipping to -2°C.
- Uttarakhand: Hill stations like Mussoorie and Nainital could experience highs of 6°C-9°C, with nighttime temperatures touching 0°C or lower in higher altitudes.
- Haryana: Plains will witness moderate cold, with maximum temperatures between 17°C-19°C and minimums around 5°C-7°C.
- Delhi NCR: The capital city is forecast to see temperatures ranging from 7°C at night to 20°C during the day, with cloudy skies and possible light showers.
The expected weather change underscores the variability of winter conditions in North India, offering relief in terms of moisture but also posing challenges for commuters and outdoor workers. Authorities and residents are advised to stay updated on weather advisories and take necessary precautions.
