It is the prerogative of the state government to select the site and area for the setup of CU :Sudhir

The earlier recommended site at Indru Nag (Dharamsala )has not been rejected by site selection committee

Dharamsala (Arvind Sharma )

In response to the blames of the BJP  leaders on the land selection for the Central University in Dharamsala and Dehra of the Kangra district, Urban Development Minister of Himachal Mr Sudhir Sharma  recon those to be false and baseless. Talking to PTI at Dgharamsala on Saturday Sudhir said,”the earlier recommended site at Indru Nag (Dharamsala )has not been brejected by site selection committee , as being claimed by the BJP leaders of the state. The indru Nag site is under observation review.” Minister said that beside this, in the fresh proposal sent to HRD ministry,  4-5 sites in and around Dharamsala has been recommended . New sites are in Dharamsala, Narwana ,Jadrangal and other vicinities .

Minister ( who is MLA of Dharamsala constituency ), disclaiming the opposition remarks said,”I am not against Dehra , a few colleges off the Central University can be established in Dehra too. “ He further added , “ when a project is being given to a state by the center , it is the prerogative of the concern state to select the site and area for its setup ,and that is what Himachal government is doing.”

Sudhir said that more than 160 hectare of land is available in Dharamsala, as against 81 hectare in Dehra, where as maximum amount of land in Dharamsala does not require even a clearance from the environment or forest ministries. He said that land in the few localities of Dharamsala require some formalities to be completed before transferring it to CU , as soon it is done the foundation stone shall be laid.

Earlier Himachal Government in its Cabinet decision of last week has decided to set up Central University at Dharamsala. It had also decided to send a fresh proposal to the Union Ministry for HRD for the CUHP campus at Dharamsala. The decision was taken after the HRD Ministry reportedly wrote to the Himachal government, granting approval to the proposal sent during the previous BJP government in the state to set up the campus at Dehra.

Government decision of setting up CU at Dharamsala evoked BJP workers, to organizing rallies in Himachal against the government’s decision. Yesterday Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) national chief and Hamirpur MP Anurag Thakur ha blamed the Virbhadra Singh-led government for hampering the setting up of a Central University of Himachal Pradesh (CUHP). “The adamant attitude of the state government has caused the inordinate delay in setting up the CUHP,” said Thakur, adding that the previous BJP government had proposed a split campus of varsity with 70% part at Dehra and 30% at Dharamsala.

Thakur said the land had been identified at both the places and even the United Progress Alliance (UPA), that was then in power, had approved the proposal.

Last month BJP MLA Ravinder Ravi, after meeting HRD Minister Smriti Irani also gave a statement that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to lay the foundation stone of CUHP at Dehra in March.

Ravinder Ravi said the government had discriminated against Dehra subdivision by deciding to allot land for the Central University Himachal Pradesh (CUHP) campus at Dharamsala. He alleged that the Congress government had earlier sent a proposal to set up the university at Dharamsala that was rejected by the committee appointed by the HRD Ministry.

Site selection for two reputed institutes has become a political issue in Himachal Pradesh. With leaders having difference of opinion, these institutes are witnessing delay in finalization of sites for their permanent campuses.

In 2010, the Central University was shifted to a temporary campus in Shahpur but till date, no permanent campus has come up as politicians have failed to evolve a consensus on the final site.

For the last four years, the Central University is running from the transit campus at Shahpur .Whereas all the 16 other CUs allotted along with has started functioning.
