PGI Foundation Day Celebrations

Chandigarh, July 7 Tuesday. (Kulbir Singh Kalsi):-Prof. S K Sarin, Director, Institute of Liver and Billary Sciences (ILBS), New Delhi was the chief guest today during the 53rd Foundation Day celebrations of PGIMER.  With Prof. Sarin’s vision and high quality of scientific work, he and his department were sanctioned the first Advanced Center for Liver Diseases in the Country. As a visionary he developed a superb Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS), the first of its kind in Asia. Prof. Sarin was also nominated to lead the Medical council of India as the Chairman of the Board of Governors. He along with his team developed a detailed vision document concerning the reforms in the undergraduate and post-graduate curriculum and in the examination pattern. MCI published the document as ‘Vision 2015’ which was covered by The Lancet as a land mark change in the history of medical education in India.


Prof Sarin addressed the PGI fraternity with an inspiring lecture ‘Tribute to a teacher’.  He apprised the students of the tricks of learning, observing and internalizing the academic methods and values to be successful professionals.  He praised PGIMER for its rich educational culture and tradition. The Institute gives the students a chance to be original, tread their own path and hence achieve world recognition, said Prof Sarin.  The Institute had a global presence which he said had always kept all the peers over the world in awe. According to him, “Motivation, modesty and having a mentor were the three values to excellence for a student.”  This way he coaxed the students to become better reflections of their original teachers.


Prof. Yogesh Chawla, Director PGIMER earlier introduced the chief guest and apprised the audience about the recent academic developments in the Institute. Prof Chawla said, “The PGI faculty has attracted around 30 crores as extra-mural grant last year and published about 1100 research papers.  We now have international collaborations with Universities of Virginia, John Hopkins, Harvard, Utah, Innsbruck (Austria), Karolinska University (Sweden), University of Oxford and School of Tropical Medicine (London), George Institute and many national collaborations like Chandigarh Regional Innovation and Knowledge Cluster Council which includes Panjab University, Institute of Microbial Technology, IIT Ropar, IISER Mohali, other collaborating Institutes like IIT Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras, Roorke, Mandi, Institute of Bioinformatics, Bangalore and National Academy of Medical Sciences.”


“PGI is credited with starting postdoctoral courses, for the first time, which are now being emulated by other institutes in the country.  To name a few these are DM in Endocrinology, Neonatology, Nephrology, Pulmonary Medicine, Hepatology, Clinical Pharmacology, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Addiction Psychiatry, Pediatric Critical Care, Pediatric Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology, Hisotopathology, Cardiac Anaesthesia/Clinical Hematology/ Hematopathology/Pediatric Neurology/Neuro-anaesthesia and Pediatric Radiology.  


Imaging techniques of the institute have been augmented.  We have now 5 CT scan, 3 MRI Scan, PET CT Scan, Gamma Cameras to provide best of the diagnostic facilities.”
