Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla Explores Atal Tunnel, Highlights Tourism and Local Benefits
In a significant visit today, Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla, accompanied by Lady Governor Janaki Shukla, toured the Atal Tunnel, the highest single-tube highway tunnel in the world, located over 10,000 feet above sea level. The Governor engaged with senior officers from the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) to learn about the tunnel’s escape routes and its immense benefits to the region.
Stretching over 9 km, the Atal Tunnel connects the Lahaul-Spiti and Kullu valleys, drastically reducing travel time and distance between key locations like Manali, Keylong, and Leh. “The tunnel is not just a feat of engineering; it has become a boon for local residents and has significantly boosted tourism in the area,” remarked Governor Shukla.
During the visit, Commanding Officer of the BRO, Sandeep Singh, explained that the escape tunnel opens every 400 meters, effectively bypassing areas prone to blockages, avalanches, and traffic jams. This innovation enhances the safety and reliability of the route for travelers.
The Governor was warmly welcomed at the North Portal of the tunnel by Deputy Commissioner Rahul Kumar, district administration officials, and local dignitaries. Following this, he visited the picturesque Sissu Lake, emphasizing the unmatched beauty of Lahaul Valley. “A visit to Himachal Pradesh is incomplete without experiencing the breathtaking landscapes of Lahaul,” he stated, praising the central government’s efforts in improving road infrastructure through the BRO.
“The beauty of Lahaul cannot be described in words. We must safeguard its sanctity and pristine environment,” Governor Shukla added, underlining the need for maintaining cleanliness and ecological balance in the region.
The Governor concluded his trip by returning to Manali via the Rohtang Pass. Earlier in the day, he paid his respects at the Vashisht Rishi temple in Manali, marking a day filled with appreciation for the cultural and natural treasures of Himachal Pradesh.
