Harpreet Kaur Babla Becomes Chandigarh’s New Mayor: BJP Triumphs Amid Cross-Voting

Harpreet Kaur Babla of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been elected as the new Mayor of Chandigarh, defeating Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)-Congress alliance candidate Prem Lata by securing 19 out of 36 votes. The election witnessed three instances of cross-voting, which played a pivotal role in Babla’s victory.

At 60 years old, Harpreet Kaur Babla is the councillor for Ward No. 10 (encompassing Sectors 27, 28, and 29) in the Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh. She resides in Sector 27 and is married to former councillor Devinder Singh Babla. An alumna of the Convent of Jesus and Mary in Dehradun, she holds a BA (Hons) in History and an MA in English. Harpreet hails from a military family; her father is a retired army colonel. Initially associated with the Congress party, she switched to the BJP after her re-election in 2021.

The mayoral election was closely contested, with all 36 votes declared valid. Harpreet Kaur Babla secured 19 votes, while Prem Lata received 17. The BJP’s victory was significantly influenced by cross-voting from members of the AAP-Congress alliance.

Following the mayoral election, the positions of Senior Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor were also decided. Jasbir Singh Bunty of the AAP-Congress combine was elected as Senior Deputy Mayor, defeating BJP’s Bimala Dubey. Similarly, Taruna Mehta from the same alliance was elected as Deputy Mayor, overcoming BJP’s Lakhbir Singh Billu.

In the 35-member House, the AAP-Congress alliance held a combined strength of 19 councillors—13 from AAP and six from Congress—along with the anticipated support of ex-officio member and MP Manish Tewari, bringing their expected total to 20 votes. The BJP, with 16 councillors, relied on cross-voting to achieve the majority. The defection of three votes from the alliance to the BJP was instrumental in Harpreet Kaur Babla’s election as Mayor.

This outcome mirrors the previous year’s mayoral election, where the BJP also secured victory through strategic cross-voting, underscoring the party’s adeptness in navigating the political dynamics of the Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh.
