Haryana Government Suspends Internet and SMS Services in Nuh District Ahead of Braj Mandal Jalabhishek Yatra
Nuh, Haryana: In a preemptive measure to maintain public order, the Haryana government ordered a 24-hour suspension of mobile internet and bulk SMS services in Nuh district starting from 6 pm on Sunday to 6 pm on Monday. This decision comes ahead of the Braj Mandal Jalabhishek Yatra, which was marred by violence last year.
The order, issued by Haryana Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Anurag Rastogi, cites concerns about potential tension, annoyance, agitation, damage to public and private property, and disturbance of public peace in Nuh. The suspension aims to curb the spread of misinformation and rumors via social media platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook, and Twitter.
The Nuh Police have implemented tight security measures to ensure the smooth passage of the Yatra. Last year, on July 31, violence erupted during a Vishva Hindu Parishad procession in Nuh, resulting in the deaths of two home guards and injuries to at least 15 others, including several policemen. The mob attempted to halt the procession by pelting stones and setting cars on fire.
The government’s proactive step underscores the importance of preventing unrest and ensuring the safety of residents and participants. By suspending internet and SMS services, authorities aim to mitigate the risk of false information and incitement spreading through digital channels.
This incident highlights the delicate balance between maintaining public safety and managing the challenges posed by digital communication. The community hopes for a peaceful event and the restoration of normalcy following the Yatra.
